Grandma's Biggie Blankets was literally inspired by two real grandmas and some blankets they designed and made for their first grandson (seen above) in 2007.
As first-time parents, we had just finished all of the requisite parenting classes and had learned just how much health care professionals and parents recommended swaddling newborns. Once our son was born, we wanted very much to swaddle him, but he was a large baby and all of the store-bought receiving blankets we had been given just didn't work. They were all too small - he kicked out very easily - and the materials were cheap and of very low quality. Friends lent us various different specialty swaddlers covered with straps and velcro and pockets and the like, but those didn't work very well, either, and were barely big enough to cover our son as a newborn, much less after he had been busy growing for a couple of weeks.
Luckily for us, Grandma #1 us a world-class quilter and very quickly began making larger flannel blankets that were of a higher quality and just the right size for swaddling our son. These worked great at first, but as April turned into May, the nights grew warmer and the flannel blankets began to be too hot for him to sleep comfortably.
One warm night, Grandma #2 happened to be visiting and remarked, "Why not make him a blanket out of seersucker, like people used to wear in the old days before air conditioning?" OF COURSE!
Inspiration struck and the next thing you know, not only were we swaddling our son in seersucker blankets, we were giving them to friends and family as unique gifts for their new babies and being urged to start a business and start selling them to the public! Now, two years later, here we are.
Although seersucker blankets are our most popular product, flannel is still the best choice for colder times of the year and we sell plenty of those blankets as well. Our luxury blankets make a great choice for dressing baby up a little bit or for especially cold days and nights when a thicker blanket is needed.
All of our blankets come in the same large rectangular size that's the perfect size and shape for swaddling babies for as long as they need to be, and they're all made to our high quality standards with premium 100% cotton fabric and a strong and durable rolled hem. There are no itchy nylon tags to irritate baby's skin, and since our blankets are flat and don't have any pockets or straps, they can be used for many other purposes than swaddling: in cribs, as a nursing coverup, as an additional layer in the stroller on a cold day, for toddlers' nap time, and even as a perfectly sized security blanket.
Our products also make a unique and useful baby shower gift, and most of our sales come from referrals from existing customers who recommend our products to their friends and families.
